Team Fortress 2: CEVO-M rolls on in Week 5

By: Everett Wells - Published September 02, 2009 at 1:04 PM EDT - Writer Archive
The European fav, ctf_turbine, is front and centre this week.
(GotFrag) - Many happy returns to you all, my little friends - I am back from the treeplanting bush and, after two years of it, most likely never to return... which means I'll be writing about this damn game until she keels over and dies. But enough about me - the story tonight is the often dropped and rarely taken serious CEVO-Main division, who's seen six teams come and go since the beginning of the season and probably will see a couple more before things finish up. Some could wonder how this rapid turnover reflects on the division's integrity, but personally I think CEVO's doing the right thing - they've realized that they are no longer the top TF2 league on the continent, and have tailored things accordingly to their more laid-back, mid-level teams who just want to PLAY (ie. not get FFWs), much like TWL has. Of course, the difference here is CEVO has no beef with swapping teams between their two divisions, which I think is a plus.

But enough gabbing about CEVO's grand plan for world domination, let's take a look at tonight's matchups (no actual score predictions tonight, since its ctf_turbine):

the terribles (3-1) v Strickland Propane (3-0)
Match of the Week
rk: A pretty easy choice for MOTW - personally I'd slot these two teams (according to jk's rather extensive skill level breakdown) in the Mid/High level, since they've been around the block and have managed to stick together for a number of seasons, steadily improving along the way. They also sit 1-2 in the CEVO Standings, and are no doubt heavy favourites to go deep in the playoffs. As far as this specific match goes, I'm giving Strickland the nod - mostly because I think they're a better team, but also partially because of 40jam's sex appeal.

terribles << Strickland

notalent (2-1) v Confederacy (3-1)
rk: I'm feeling a strong chance of a FF by one of these teams tonight, but assuming both do show up I have no doubt that the extensive talent (pun not intended) on Confederacy's roster is more than enough to prevail tonight.

notalent << Confederacy

Xensity (2-1) v point and click (2-0)
rk: pac draws the one pro team left in a close second choice for MOTW this week, as Xensity and their rediculously massive roster are pretty much the team to beat this season, and can probably make the finals with zero preparation/scrimming for the rest of the season. pac certainly have a shot at being that other team in the finals, but for this round I'm gonna go with the tried and true.

Xensity >> pac

Team Caboose (2-1) v TBA (2-0)
rk: You'll note I labelled Xensity as being the only real pro team left, and I stand by that despite the number of high-profile guys on TBA (get a name, will ya?) - sure, they've all been on high level teams before, but this team (which is almost a remake of SIT, when I look at it) just slaps of a pugteam looking to have some fun... but then again, so does Xensity. Either way, they'll take Caboose down no problem... as long as ft doesn't get too distracted hammering out his textbinds.

Caboose << TBA

Slaughterhouse Gaming (1-3) v Blight.Businessmen (2-1)
rk: I wouldn't get too wrapped up in sG's record heading into this one, since they've had to play 3 rather talented teams while Blight's barely played at all (through no fault of theirs, of course). I'm definately a sG fan, especially with what they've been doing in ESEA-O this season, and don't thinkt they'll have much trouble with ehFk's gang.

Slaughterhouse >> Blight.Businessmen

We kidnap fat kids (1-2) v No Grid (1-2)
rk: I'd write a real pred for this, but I just don't think fatkids will show up this week.

fatkids << No Grid
