So CAL has finally created a division for Warcraft III’s most popular custom map, DotA Allstars. DotA is quickly becoming popular in the Counter Strike circle, isn’t it time to check it out?
Origins and Concepts Defence of the Ancients (DotA) stems from the map design of the Starcraft custom map Aeon of Strife. Two bases are placed on opposite corners of the map. Three lanes branch out from the bases, and armies for both sides will spawn along these lanes at intervals. The opposing armies meet in the center and battle. The Sentinels are the red Night Elf based team located on the bottom left, and their opponents are the Scourge, the green Undead based team located on the top right. Both sides are vying to destroy the Ancient of the other; the World Tree is the Sentinel Ancient, and the Frozen Throne is the Scourge Ancient. Every lane has two barracks, one producing melee units and one producing ranged ones. Destroying a barracks will produce strong creeps capable of pushing the lane. Destruction of all barracks will produce mega creeps, which usually decides victory. Technically, the battle will be drawn even and no side will make any ground. This is where you come in to turn the tides. Finding a Game There are generally two types of public games to join. One way to join a game is through the Battle.net custom game join screen. This list has DotA games as well as many other customs to play. These games are good places to learn the basics without the worry of many players beyond your skill level. Though finding games to join from this list is easy, you have no idea about the location of the host or whether players will randomly leave. TDA games, on the other hand, are run by Team DotA Allstars. These games are exclusive to active members of the DotA-Allstars forum, players with an icon and selected safelisted members deemed to have an appropriate skill level. TDA runs active banlists, which prevents spoofers and leavers from entering your game. Though the system is effective, it is not flawless. You can find more information on becoming safelisted at www.dota-allstars.com. Play Modes The different play modes of DotA are important to note. The most common modes are:

And Sw1ft!, DOTA is just like any other online multiplayer game. Y9ou can get servers and games where there are quitters or immature players, but if that's all you find, then your choices in which game room to play in are quite poor. There are plenty of serious game hosts out there that go so far as to double check everyone's ping and location before commencing the game (these people also typically keep an up-to-date banlist for whatever it's worth to you).
I usually play it during classes at school with other classmates ^^
#12 Its just a custom map for WC3 doesnt have much to do with regular Warcraft. Only thing kind of similiar is just using one a hero
Agreed #6 is a doushe
Lion is a good choice and a good hero period.
His hex skill is very noob friendly, impale is great for noobs too, his mana spell is useful and finger of death is an easy ult to use.
For an agility hero, I would say razor/viper/clinkz would be good choices.
For strength, Kind Leoric, because of life steal and revive.
But europe chose an diffrent approch to getting leavefree games.
In europe we got an community called #dotapickup.euro @ quakenet , or www.dotapickup.com .
Which is open for everyone, and yet some invite/pro channels for those who becomes better then the rest.
The best clans in europe so far is Team-Q, Boomtown, TeG.
TeG and boomtown concists of fairly famous warcraft3 players, and Team-Q is an old starcraftclan which pretty much consists of the swedish bw dynasti (including MadFroG).
Its seems like Dota has an bright future in europe, and i hope you Americans (regardless putting Bush in office) will get the same~
None of them are really good vs. everything.
Anyone can be countered.
edit : no, just because there are cal-i players opped doesnt mean its cal-i players trying to run a dota channel, everyone opped in there is of very high calibur
dota ownz! all heros are fun =P
The reasons I selected certain heroes is that they are generally quite round. I tried to pick one of each kind of hero as well. Lion is definitely a good choice that I forgot to think of as well as Viper. As for Razor, the low damage in the beginning and low life with minimal escapes isn't too friendly for new players. Though the regeneration is definitely good for noobs. I purposely did not pick clinkz because I do not want those just starting to have a ridiculous dependancy on Wind Walk and bad habits such as sitting around invisible. Not to mention, Clinkz is just a big target for nukers. As for Leo, defintely a good hero except for developing the lovely habit of greedy players to chase forever to get a kill because they have reincarnation.

I felt Drow would be a good introduction for players to learn about how to use Silence which is very useful in league play with Deathprophet. The farming potential allows new players to creep neutrals easily with Marksmanship but just like most agility heroes, is a target for nukes. As for DK... come on, he's freakign awesome. Firebreath + Longest Stun in the game + Passive regeneration with item regeneration, he is a very good tank and a great hero for players to learn to play a melee hero.
lich and necro are hard heros to start with
and what about ring of bastillus
check it out #dotapickup.euro Quakenet
