Warcraft 3: WCG 2006 WC3 Preview

By: Jaczie Lo - Published October 17, 2006 at 3:05 PM EDT - Writer Archive
Old favorites and new contenders fight it out for the upcoming WCG Grand Finals.
This is Warcraft III's fourth year in the World Cyber Games when it made it debut back in 2003. Previous champions return to defend or reclaim their title, while new contenders try to claim the prize for their own. The two top favorites to win this event are of course, the past winners--4K.Grubby and WE.IGE.Sky, who are still at the top of their game.

There two are immediately followed by 4K.ToD, who has played extremely well this year, getting invited to most international tournaments. He also placed highly on past WCG events, so this just might be his time to shine.

SK.Deadman won't walk away emptyhanded, as he has proven time and again that he's Europe's top Night Elf. He doesn't get to attend LAN events as much as he should, but it doesn't mean he's not capable of walking away with the prize.

The spotlight is set on 4K.Creolophus recently, especially with his recent recruitment to the Four Kings. He finished top 8 last year, only to fall to the one who eventually took home the crown. Creo is under and overestimated at the same time, but fact can't be denied that this player has quite the game.

Tribulations usually bring good fortune after the storm. ONE-GoStop lost his beloved NiP clan a few months back, but his newly named team continues to be strong and intact. GoStop is probably the person who always finishes second instead of bringing home the gold. Despite this however, he's still one of the best pioneering Undead players, so he just might have what it takes to finally prove his detractors wrong.

WE.IGE.SoJu always seems to get through the toughest WCG qualifiers, despite having the strongest opponents. He only managed to get through the round of 16 last year, eventually losing to 4K.ToD. He's still one of the world's strongest players, but he's also up against the world's best--so despite his skill, he might have to struggle a bit to get through.

Other strong contenders are MYM]Ciara, WE.DIDI8, hoorai.Nilknarf who just might surprise those who already picked their favorites. Read on for the group predictions to get acquainted on the matches to come.

Group A

B3lcEbU
arby_ng
verGe.Canuck
hoorai.Levin
srs`Nightwolf

There are three names that relatively stand out of this group since they participate regularly at online leagues. vrG.Canuck is obviously the most active player out of the group, followed closely by hoorai.Levin and srs.Nightwolf. This should be easily taken by Canuck, with Nightwolf for the second spot.

Group B

nEph.hum4nic
t[wM]Cnrus-pGn
Beorn
Seta
hoorai.KiWiKaKi

This group is going to be between hoorai.KaKi and nEph.hum4nic. It would probably be a huge upset if any of the other three is able to take a spot away from any of these two. KaKi shows potential as a top player after being drafted into hoorai, while hum4nic is an old-school player with a lot of experience. I'll go for hum4nic for the top spot, with KaKi filling the second.

Group C

Myth.Carefly
zergle
eNet_PaulYan
rCode.lol_vs_XD
WE.DIDI8

DIDI8 is the name that stands out in this group, but no one should underestimate his opponents. This is the first WCG for DIDI8, while Myth.Carefly and rCode.lol_vs_XD are WCG veterans, both able to advance their groups in previous years. With these three Night Elf players DIDI8 is sure to get the top spot, followed by either of the two, but I'll go for lol_vs_XD.
