Warcraft 3: Five with mTw-PaTo

A short chat with Bernardo "PaTo" Rodrigues after his matches in the group stages, where he finished 3rd.

How did you do in your group stage? Did you play as well as you wanted?

I slept very bad last night so I wasn't feeling so well. I played so bad versus Soju and Creolophus, they were amazing today. I think I just have to concentrate for tomorrow's match and hope to do better, because I know I only played like 50% of my potential. Playing Night Elf mirrors is ok, since I played a lot of Elf mirrors, but both Soju and Creolophus are both skilled with Elf so I really couldn't so very well against them. I hope tomorrow I can play better.

What do you think about the ESWC map pool?

The map pool is very good for all other races except for the Undead versus Night Elf matchup. There are a lot of broken maps against Undead, there are three good maps for Undead-- Turtle Rock, Secret Valley and Twisted Meadows. While two good maps for Elf (Echo Isles, Terenas Stand), so we gotta play two good maps for Undead and one for Elf. I usually thumb down Twisted Meadows against Undead.

How did you prepare for this tournament and who are the players you practiced with?

I practiced a lot versus Orc because I had to play vs Kaki at WCG Pan America, along with DNA and some other Orcs that I don't remember now. And Undead against Giacomo at Stars War, so I played with HasuObs and FuRy. My internet was bad last week, I couldn't play much so I only had the weekend to practice. After winning against Giacomo I had to get my visa for China so I couldn't practice at all. I had to travel to some other city to get the Chinese visa. Most of my practice for ESWC came from recent tournaments that I played.

What are your personal expectations coming into ESWC? How far would you like to go?

I'd be proud of myself if I got top 4 but that's going to be hard. I have to see the groups tomorrow so I know what I can expect for myself. I hope I get a group without the top favorites; the guys that I really don't want to meet are Lyn, Creolophus and Grubby. Those three are the most challenging players for me in this tournament.

Being an ESWC participant for four years, what do you think about the ESWC now and compared to before? Do you think you've progressed through those years as a player?

Besides the hotel being sh*tty, and the prize money being cut, the ESWC is doing a good job with the tournament. This is my fourth ESWC, and they didn't really change much, they didn't progress in any way good or bad. The water doesn't taste so good in Paris and everything is expensive. But through those years, I think I got better. I practice a lot over the years. I wish I could play like my best all the time, sometimes I can't play my best all the time. Age matters since when you're very young you can't handle the pressure, but when you get older you can do it.
