Warcraft 3: The Beginning of the End: WC3L PD11

Frank Fields takes a good look at the last WC3L playday and how it affects the teams concerned.

And The Winner Is...

The only team with a guaranteed playoff spot at the beginning of week 11 of Meet Your Makers, and they finished strong winning 4-1, only lost being the former MYM.Sca player Ciara, who has proven in the past to be a very strong player himself.

As is, the final standings are:

But wait! There's more!

There is one unplayed match that has huge playoff implications.

mTw-PaTo vs. SK.HoT which has been postponed to Saturday evening by SK. Seeing as HoT played very well at IEST, he should be able to be the Brazilian Pato, but he might not. This game has huge implications for SK because as is, they are tied in points with WE, and WE holds the tie breaker over them because of their head to head score earlier this seaso

If HoT beats PaTo, then Sk will be the 2nd seed and qualify straight to the offline finals, but if HoT loses to PaTo, WE be the 2nd seed and SK the 3rd seed.

As you can see, this is a very important game.

mTw's disappointing finish

Midway through the seasons, I had high hopes for mTw, they were playing well and won 3 of their first 5 matches, but the 2nd half has proven not nearly as good, losing 4 or their last 5 matches. This team finishes just 2 spots out of the playoffs. It isn't as if mTw has a weak lineup, with players like hanf, LongWalk, Nilknarf, PaTo and Protois, who most people wouldn't put in top tier, but each have had some good results internationally in the past. I hope mTw comes back next season a little wiser, a little stronger, and ready to make the push to the Offline Finals.

Too Little Too Late

4Kings misses out by 1 game. The key match down the stretch was the 2-3 loss to Fnatic in week 10, 4K had most of what they asked for, Fnatics strongest player (Satiini) was matched v 4Ks weakest player, but the rest of the matchups should have been winnable. Grubby and ToD won their solo matches... but no one else did; story of 4K's season. Grubby and ToD consistently carrying the team, but can't get any help. 4K just doesn't look the same without Creo around. They did a good job beating the talented Clan Go in the last week 3-2, but they needed 4 points, and didn't get it. The only hope for 4K now is that WC3L admins decide that since Go isn't attending the offline finals, to put 4K up a spot and pretend Go isn't there for purpose of the playoffs.

Best Undead?

FoV is the best Undead player” I heard this so often. I sometimes believe it when I see him perform, but sometimes, I just don't see it. He plays amazingly, but loses some matches he shouldn't. He has been inconsistent this season, showing flashes of brilliance that everyone knows he is capable of, and then disappears in some matches. Falling 1-2 to happy this week. For BET to get far in the playoffs, they need NE specialist FoV to step up and be automatic. Facing Night Elves such as Moon, Remind, Soju, Ohjie, Shy and Sase in this post-season, he will have a hard time. FoV has to be for BET what Moon has been for MYM: An auto-win. Last season in the offline finals, WE's Sky did not drop a single map. If FoV does this, BET should win WC3L, but that is a huge if.

Playoff Matchups

If SK finishes 2nd we will have WE v mouz, and Go v BET for the playoffs. Go and BET played just recently, with both Undeads FoV and Sweet losing to the Night Elves of Ohjie and Shy being a huge key to this matchup. When WE faced mouz early this season it was a 4-1 beat down, and I can't say I see WE losing to mouz if they play. If SK plays mouz, I think it will be just as much of a one-sided match. No disrespect to mouz here, they seem to play well every match and every season, they are just outmatched here.

As I see it, the offline final will be:

  1. Meet Your Makers

  2. SK Gaming

  3. World Elite

  4. Bejing E-sports Team

MVP of the Week: Fly100%

Okay mouz: You need 3 points to qualify into the playoffs. No problem right? The catch? You have to do it against power house BET. No problem says Fly. He beats a very strong NE player in Check and helps to win his 2v2 match over FoV and Sweet in a few very close games. Well played Fly, you helped your team earn its way into the playoffs

Match of the Week: Sky v Satiini

The most dominant Human player in the world vs one of the most innovative Night Elves in the world, Satiini goes for Warden in every game of this match and gives Sky a terror of a time. Sky counters with some very good maneuvering in the Terenas Stand game especially, but Satiini gets very creative in order to win this match. A real joy to watch 2 of the best strategists in WC3 go at it in an exciting 3 games.

Upset of the Week: Happy > FoV 2:1 & Fly100% > Check 2:1

BET needed to win 4 for a guaranteed spot in the offline finals. It just wasn't to be. BET superstars confuse me and I don't understand how repeatedly they can play so well and lose matches due to under performance. Fly and Happy are very good players, I can't stress that enough, but FoV and Check are supposed to be giants of the game. In a clutch moment like this, your stars cannot lose. Mouz beat BET to get into the playoffs, and BET lost some huge positioning as a result.
