Warcraft 3: NGL ONE WC3 Finals Preview

By: Jaclyn Lo - Published February 20, 2008 at 6:04 PM EST - Writer Archive
Jaclyn "JacziE" Lo takes an in-depth look at the four teams heading into the NGL ONE 07/08 Finals by dissecting their strengths and weaknesses, while breaking down their regular season performances.

This NGL ONE Finals showcases four great teams to fight it out in Berlin this weekend. Defending champions Meet Your Makers have three other teams to defend their crown against, including last season's 2nd place team, Mousesports.

MYM's biggest rival, SK Gaming, comes into the tournament ready to steal the crown away from the defending champions. Their lineup is considered lethal to their opponents. Mousesports reinforced their roster by adding ToD, which boosted their team up significantly.

mTw comes as a replacement for the disbanded Four Kings, who was supposed to be part of the LAN finals. This will be their first ever LAN finals as a team, which makes them the underdogs of the tournament. Nevertheless, expect them to fight with all they got to prove that they deserve the spot given to them this season.

This preview illustrates each player's win-loss run during the online season, along with their potential strengths and weaknesses.

Meet Your Makers

Meet Your Makers defines inconsistency. They are plagued with this depiction because in theory, they boast of one of the strongest rosters in the scene. Lucifer broke out of his shell in 2006, surprising everyone by winning ESWC and cementing his name in Warcraft III history. His performance in the Battle.net Season Finals early 2007 also showed his prowess, where he took 2nd place. Moon, as everyone knows, is a level above everyone else when it comes to the game. Their new recruit, Shy, was considered the best player of his former clan. FoCuS is also a formidable Orc, while Susiria is a capable player as well.

Despite the star-studded lineup, they usually falter when it’s needed the most. The NGL ONE system is a double-edged sword – it can either be lenient or unforgiving. If a player loses, the can be saved by another; but if there’s no one to step up then the system can utterly destroy a team from the inside out.

Strengths: Moon can probably take two points with him on a bad day. Shy can probably take 2-3 in a good day. Lucifer can take most players, but will have difficulty when faced against an Orc on an unfavorable map. Having a decent Orc on their roster with FoCuS (who improved immensely) will help them take down stronger Undeads.

Weaknesses: Moon might not even come to the finals, considering his hiatus for the past few months – if this is true, this is going to be an immense blow to the team. Having two Undeads isn’t exactly the “best” case scenario. They also lack a good Human player.

Prediction: I’d say they would end up in the final 2, losing to SK in the finals. If Moon does not show up, I think mouz will end up pulling a win over them and they would end up in 3rd place.

SK Gaming

One word: BORING! As much as I like the SK players down to their very amicable manager, writing about SK Gaming bores me to tears. There’s nothing else to write except something like “they are the best” or “virtually unstoppable.”

In another league, SK Gaming is still running undefeated. Is it because of their insane lineup? What’s other reason is there? SoJu, Lyn and ReMinD make up the new “holy trinity” of Warcraft III – with ReiGn and Miou as their able apostles. This is their tournament (again) to lose.

Strengths: Lyn and SoJu can take down the world’s best players. I can safely say that these two players can probably take down a team on their own during a good day. But hey, their “safety nets” isn’t so shabby with ReMinD, ReiGn and Miou.

Weaknesses: What? They have a weakness? Okay, SoJu loses sometimes and so does Lyn. ReMinD, ReiGn and Miou, too. But seriously, these players can win a game or two before losing (maybe except Miou, no offense) And to win NGL, you need only four!

Prediction: Something for them to win it all – AGAIN! Until the best players of other clans decide to rally up and band together to make the ultra-super-mega-clan to take them down – SK is going to continue to dominate again, and again… and again. To play it on the safe side, they might lose in the finals on a fluke, but I won’t bet money on it.
