Warcraft 3: BET.WhO interviewed

By: Travis Pettey - Published April 07, 2008 at 3:10 AM EDT - Writer Archive

How did you join Beijing E-sports Team?

I started out playing for fun. Then I played hard for regional tournies. I started playing seriously again around April of 2007. Jini [also known as BerA] recommended I look into BET.

How often do you practice and did your practice habits change when you joined Beijing Esports Team? Is practice in the form of custom or ladder games for you?

If I am not busy with other things, I play about 1/3 of a day. But it’s not all practice though, sometimes I play arranged team and talk with other team members too. My practice habits have changed ever since I joined BET. I tried to do my academics and gaming at the same time but it didn’t work out that well. I’m trying very hard to practice now but sometimes I get lazy. I am still trying my best.

I’ve been practicing with other team members over custom games. I also play ladder whenever I can’t find any practice partners. I don’t really play ladder for practice. I ladder just to have fun. One fun thing about ladder though is the times when you face a highly skilled opponent.

How was playing Warcraft III like before you joined BET?

I played a lot in ROC, then a bit of TFT after it came out. [WhO only started playing actively again a few months before BET’s inception] I used to play all the time since I know a lot of progamers from the past. I played ladder mainly, then play games with progamers when they request for practice.

How do you compare your Orc playing style against other Orcs? Do you think European and Asian Orc playstyles are different?

I think I have a tendency to be more aggressive than other Orc players. I prefer to play the game by having constant battles against my enemy, rather than sitting back and relying on macro and total game management.

I think my strength in playing Orc is the usage of the Blademaster. I try to get the best items for the Blademaster and maximize his power and potential as soon as possible.

In the past, European and Asian orcs playstyle is very distinct. I think Asian and European Orcs have different playstyles. European Orcs appear to have a tendency to solve the game by good total-game management; while Asian Orcs concentrate more on the micro during large battles. But I think the play styles are now more similar than before.

What is your favorite and least favorite matchup and why?

My least favorite match is against Human. Human players doing tower rush is very hard for me. I think that matchup needs total concentration.

I like the Orc mirror matchup. The factor of playing the same race makes me believe that the better player will have the best chances of winning.

Orc players find it hard to face the Human Tier 1 tower rush. What are your thoughts about this rush and how do you counter it?

The main thing that I focus on is scouting the rush and getting ready for it and careful management of my units instead of trying for a large counter.

Druid of the Talons (DotTs) are one of the harder things to counter for Orcs as well. What are your tips for other Orc players when facing this strategy?

Best thing against DotT is to target the heroes. Targeting units is not the right thing to do usually.

What goes through your mind when you are against Human on Echo Isles and they attempt a fast expansion with Mountain King or Archmage as their first hero?

I think differently every game I play. Although it usually depends on the amount of towers.

What do you think of the current game balance and what would you like to see changed for the upcoming patch?

I think most parts of the game are already good, but there are some things that can be changed. I’d like to see some changes made to Human towers and Druid of the Talons.

BET is currently running a great season and is still without losses. You’re on top of the player rankings and you and ChecK have one of the more successful 2v2 teams. How would you rate your performance?

All the players practice very hard and our practice shows in results of leagues. Previously, our goal was to get more wins than losses. ChecK and I have good harmony playing together, so we are getting great results.
