World of Warcraft: Elude speaks... on WoW?

By: JP McDaniel - Published April 25, 2007 at 2:50 PM EDT - Writer Archive
Jon "Elude" Gilbert, of the once great TEC, speaks out about eSports and World of Warcraft in the competitive realm.

First off, for those who don't know, let's talk about who you are and your accomplishments in the Counter-Strike world.

My name is Jon Gilbert, most people know me as Elude who played with and led TEC, which was, when I retired it, the oldest living Counter-Strike clan. TEC was one of the top American teams in CS from around 2002-2005 and at one point in 2003 probably considered the best.

What caused you to stop playing CS in 2005? Was it World of Warcraft?

Actually no, most people probably thought that and probably won't believe me, but WoW had nothing to do with me stopping playing CS. I knew TEC was going to die after the 17-24th place at CPL because there honestly really wasn't anyone I wanted to recruit and play with, seeing as a lot of good players in the community had already been in TEC or I didn't want them. After I disbanded TEC I really didn't get any decent offers from teams I wanted to play with. So I basically just stopped playing and picked up WoW again in the off time.

What's your take on eSports currently? Has it changed for the better, or for the worse since you last competed?

Well I've been out of it for over a year now, I almost competely stopped checking up on teams on GotFrag, but will snoop around when it seems like its CPL/ESWC/WSG time. CS 1.6 seems like it is dying off like I figured and Source looks like its taking over, other than that I'm not really sure where eSports is going, but this new rise of interest in Source is definitely not a bad thing.

With CS:S becoming one of the larger games in tournament play, what led TEC to become the first to switch to it almost a year ago, when there were so little tournaments backing it?

I just saw something in it, I knew the game had a lot of flaws, but it had serious potential and I knew eventually the leagues would switch over. I even tried to persuade other American teams to do it in an article I wrote on GotFrag, not to my suprise I got flamed over it and our switch to Source constantly. I actually had my best time playing Source, especially at that CPL where we got 3rd. Now I find it ironic that all the top teams have switched and what I predicted looks like it's coming true.

Let's switch focus to another game with a lot of talk surrounding it, World of Warcraft has been picked up by the World Series of Video Games. What is your take on this?

It's really suprising, I knew the Arena would be pretty big, seeing as on our old server guilds themselves had hosted 5v5 Arena tournaments, so Arena was something a lot people were looking foward to. My major question is how is it gonna work, WoW is a very gear dependent game and CS, CS:S, and all FPS and RTS have controlled variables where everyone plays with the same settings and everything is equal. But with characters there's gear differences, so I don't know how they will work that out with pre made characters. which obviously wouldn't be fair.

Can you give the readers some insight into your WoW experience? What makes you a valid speaker on the subject?

Ive been playing WoW off and on for the last 2-3 years, I've quit a few times for personal reasons and Counter-strike itself. I am in the guild Damage Networks, which has been the #1 PVE guild on Mug'Thol since we transfered there, and we were one of the top 15ish guilds to beat Kel'Thuzad and clear Naxxaramus before the expansion came out. I have two characters: my main, a 70 Night Elf Rogue "Elude" and my alt, a 70 Human Paladin "Elewd".
