World of Warcraft: WSVG China: Pandemic's Road to the Finals

Team Pandemic is quickly becoming the team to talk about in competitive World of Warcraft. GotFrag is here to discuss the road to the finals for Pandemic and the key points that led them to win the championship match.
The World Series of Video Games 2007 first stop has been quite an event in Wuhan, China. We've seen the start of what looks to be a promising new eSport game, chinese fans worship their Warcraft 3 idols and rush the stage mobbing them, endless amounts of fans each day at the WSVG stop, and Team Pandemic won the first ever WSVG World of Warcraft 3v3 tournament with only four losses in double elimination play.

Pandemic first had to work through the hometown heroes of the event, the Chinese. A staggering 63 Chinese teams played in the event, with only two American and one European team. The Chinese however were at a slight disadvantage having never played World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade. Pandemic obviously had the upper hand against the Chinese teams and made it to the Semi Finals, where they would face Fnatic. Fnatic would run a mirror group of Pandemic with Mage, Paladin, and Warrior.

Pandemic's first meeting with Fnatic was one filled with luck. Pandemic ended up beating Fnatic 3-1 but the series was actually a lot closer then it seems. Pandemic's mage, Malice, dodged two blows from Fnatic's Warrior, TooGood. These two blows could of very well ended Malice's life and completely changed the result of the match. However, with luck on their side, Pandemic would end up winning.

After facing the European team Fnatic they would face MoB Turtle Power, their American counter parts that also ran a mirror group of Pandemic. The first match of the series went to MoB. Malice had a poor iceblock and hit the macro again after entering it, allowing MoB to score the kill on Malice and take the win. However Pandemic was not deterred. The next three matches went to the powerhouses of Pandemic with great dispels from Kint, paladin of Pandemic. Pandemic would go on to win the match 3-1. They would wait for the lower brackets to finish. Fnatic would rise through them and Pandemic would have to play them again in the championship match.

In the championship match Pandemic came out and swept Fnatic 3-0. Instead of highlighting each match (as all three matches were almost identical) GotFrag is going to highlight what caused Pandemic to win. There were many key points and plays throughout all three matches.

  • Team Pandemic's warrior Noktyn simply out damaged Fnatic's warrior TooGood.

  • In all three of the games Noktyn would dish out enough damage to make Fnatic's Mage Vo0 use his iceblock first. This allowed Pandemic to gain the upper hand during the matches with their mage still having two iceblocks and extended his life span in the match.

  • Malice, Pandemic's mage, and Kint, Pandemic's Paladin, would stack debuffs on the warrior TooGood when Malice would polymorph him, Fnatic's paladin would have to burn through more mana to cast cleanse and remove the polymoph.

  • Throughout the matches Vo0 would go out of line of sight of his paladin and would only be healed to 50%-70% each time he iceblocked giving Noktyn an easier kill.

  • Vo0's crowd control was poor throughout the matches as well; an important sheep can change the outcome of any match.

  • When Vo0 would iceblock, Noktyn would get a pummel off on Ztrider, the paladin of Fnatic, interrupting and preventing a major heal to top Vo0 off.

  • Kint used his Blessing of Freedom's, allowing the warrior to roam without being under the effect of frost armor or frost nova, at key moments throughout the match.

  • Malice pulled off an iceblock at extremely low health during the first match allowing him to catch a heal from Kinnt; if he missed this iceblock it could of cost Pandemic the match.

  • The most controversial and perhaps poorly made decision Fanatic had was to use Blessing of Protection (BoP) on Vo0 (the mage) before he would use any iceblock. Perhaps Fnatic believed that the match would last long enough for the BoP Timer to come back up.

These key moments and actions allowed for Pandemic to win the match and take home the $9,000 prize as well as being crowned the first ever World of Warcraft 3v3 Champions.
