World of Warcraft: Flow Defeats TFO to Win Regional Quals

By: Kerry LaRose - Published June 03, 2007 at 6:01 PM EDT - Writer Archive
TFO and Flow Gaming met in the grand finals of the Blizzard Regional Qualifiers, with TFO climbing through the loser's bracket to challenge the undefeated Flow Gaming team for the $5,000 prize. Despite a close series that saw several tight games, Flow ultimately triumphed in one set, winning 3-1.
Flow Gaming and TFO had never played before, and both expressed mixed feelings going into the match today. Flow Gaming, in particular, expressed some confidence that the two teams' unfamiliarity would give them an edge in the opening matches. This certainly seemed to be the case after the first game, set on Blade's Edge, with Flow slowly grinding down TFO's Shaman with sustained pressure while keeping their own Priest, Koorban, just above water. TFO kept the pressure on Koorban, seeming unwilling to switch targets after all their efforts, but were unable to land the kill. After downing the Shaman, Flow gradually mopped up for the win.

Game two, on Lordaeron, saw a much tighter matchup, as TFO chose to solo target Tiz, applying nonstop pressure throughout the fight and dropping him after a long, tense back-and-forth game. However, Flow then immediately dropped Benevolent, and the fight suddenly intensified into a matter of mana conservation and longevity. Flow eventually wore down TFO's supply of heals, with Valsing sneaking away to drink at one point, and TFO found themselves down 2-0.

Game three, on Blade's Edge, saw TFO once again focusing down Tiz, and this time they were able to accomplish the feat without losing a member of their own. The pressure from TFO's Warrior and a few clutch polymorphs were simply too much to keep up the Warlock, and after several narrow escapes he was cornered and dropped. Koorban quickly followed, and from there on TFO quickly mopped up the remaining members of Flow.

Game four, on Nagrand, saw TFO once again focusing down Tiz, and as before Flow was simply unable to keep him up against the non-stop pressure and damage applied by TFO's balanced lineup. However, this time TFO's Benevolent once again dropped almost immediately after Tiz, putting the teams at a 4v4 situation with few available targets for TFO to assist onto, and Flow's members having a sizable HP and Mana advantage over their opponents. Several last-ditch efforts were made by TFO to regain control, but ultimately the mana war was won, as Valsing had saved his bubble and was able to undo many of their efforts at the last possible moment. When the dust finally cleared, four members of Flow Gaming were still standing.

FINAL SCORE: Flow wins first set, 3-1
Flow wins Grand Finals, 1-0
