GotFrag takes a look back at the inaugural event of the 2010 WoW season. ![]() The tournament takes place in two stages. In the first stage, two groups of teams (one with six teams and one with seven) battle round-robin style until the top two squads from each group move on to the second stage, a double-elimination bracket. Jared "vhell" Coulston, Alex "Vansilli" Nguyen and Nathan "Kintt" Quinn were on hand to provide commentary on the entire event for the live broadcast. Day One The tournament kicked off with a match between Loaded Black and ArenaPwnage. The first two maps had identical results as ArenaPwnage was able to successfully capitalize on bad positioning by Loaded's Priest, Numberone. As it was a best-of-five series, only one more win was needed for ArenaPwnage to take the match. The teams returned after a five-minute break, eager to continue the match. Not many were expecting what followed. Using the same strategy that ArenaPwnage had just deployed, Loaded went to work by training Arena's druid, Drmayonnaise, and came from behind to close out the series 3-2. The next match of the night took place between Team EG and Skill Capped West. Both of these teams ran almost the exact same comp, differing only in that EG used a Shaman as their healer and Skill Capped West used a Druid. Almost everyone expected these matches to come to an end within the first three minutes. Suprisingly, it took five minutes of consistent crowd control before Team EG was able to score a kill on the mage of Skill Capped West, Vidra. The second map consisted of a massive amount of burst attempts and a high level of crowd control. Once EG had their second Bloodlust up, they were finally able to land a kill and bring it to 2-0. The third round was an eight-minute exchange that ended with Drizt being taken down in a burst. EG walked away from the series without a loss. Day Two The second day of the competition began bright and early and went on to involve over 24 matches. The day was packed with exciting competition, but two matches in particular stood out: Fanatic vs. Team EG and Loaded Black vs. Complexity Black. EG ran the exact same comp as they did the previous day and Fnatic produced the only comp they know how to play, RLS. Both teams played extremely well, but in this instance Fnatic swept EG to win the series 3-0. Going into the match on Day 2, Complexity had yet to beat Loaded Black. Looking to change this, they invented their setup solely to beat RMP. After an hour of matches between the two teams, however, it appeared that Complexity would have to go back to the drawing board and figure out a new way to win. Even with Complexity's new strategy, Loaded was able to take them down 3-2. Day Three The day started off with ArenaPwnage vs. SK Gaming, in a match that was quickly acknowledged to be a classic. SK happened to be running the exact same comp that ArenaPwnage ran the first day they played (and that Fnatic ran vs. EG). The match ended with a bang, as ArenaPwnage was able to win only one map and SK Gaming took the series 3-1. The final match of the Event was one of the most thrilling of the tournament, with Complexity Red and Loaded Black facing off for the top two positions on the podium. Their shared history, while brief, is intense; the last time they met, Complexity was able to take Loaded Black 3-0 in an RMP mirror. They tried the same strategy this time around, but it's safe to say the results were a bit different. In an hour-and-a-half-long match so amazing that discussion about it still hasn't ceased, Loaded Black came out on top -- taking home $9,000 and the pride of being the season's first champions. If you happened to miss it, be sure to check out the Finals when they are released as VOD, and join us in Raleigh at the end of August for what is sure to be another exciting World of Warcraft Event! |
